Since the recession is taking its toll on every industrial and business sector, various measures are being introduced by the authorities to ensure the safety of the construction site workforce. Generally, few contractors actually make sure that every construction worker is equipped with the proper safety work wear. And the present economic situation is expected to make the contractors even more inattentive.
Last year, accidents at construction sites claimed 72 lives. Therefore, new legislation has been passed to ensure the better safety of the workers. The new legislation has upgraded the existing Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 by including more severe penalties for people who are found responsible for construction site accidents.
This legislation allows magistrates to fine the people responsible by up to £20,000, which was previously limited to only £5,000. The magistrate can also imprison the offender for a period of 12 months in severe cases.
Hopefully, this will make the contractors more careful and they will make sure that their work force is equipped with the proper safety gear. Safety gear accompanied with proper safety measures can bring down the high rate of construction site accidents and save precious lives of many construction site workers.
